Since 2019, Johor-based indie pop band Okirama has been releasing lo-fi, bedroom pop singles that mostly sound like they were made to be background music of summer and hipster cafes. In “Yang Penting Kau Selamat Sampai” they shy away from the lo-fi muffled vocals, the soft drums and the sound that fits them into any 24/7 “Indie Bedroom Pop” radio on Youtube. Instead, with an acoustic guitar, they offer the sweet melancholy that yearns, the words of a nervous lover and the intimacy of a 2 AM bedroom performance. Its production, perhaps a deliberate choice, reminisces a nearly three-minute Whatsapp voice note from one lover to another. When you play it over and over again, its selflessness glides through so charmingly: “Yang penting kau selamat sampai / Yang penting cintamu tercapai,” — these two sentences display of cosmic words of affirmation that one just can’t simply get enough of.
