After earning widespread praise for their debut album Permulaan, Mascot returns with IV, a nine-track record that marks a significant shift in their sound.
While Mascot has been celebrated for their signature Midwest emo style, IV moves away from these roots. The band describes this departure as a necessary evolution in order to push their creative boundaries.
Here’s everything you need to know about IV, including the album’s backstory, collaborations and release plans:
When did the band first work on the album?
IV is Mascot’s longest-running project to date. The earliest track, “Talk About It” was written back in December 2022, making this a three-year effort.
Originally, IV was conceived as a follow-up album by co-founders Aiman and Zi in 2022 before they pivoted to focus on Nostalgia, their four-track EP that was released in July.
Despite the shift in direction, the first four tracks of the album came together rapidly, recorded in just three days at the studio. Much of the album was completed despite Aiman’s move to the UK in 2023, with production continuing across borders.
What’s the direction of the album?
Departing from their trademark Midwest emo sound, Mascot embraced a more experimental approach to rock for IV.
This release sees them breaking free from the constraints of their previous genre, adopting a five-string bass and an entirely new tuning system to explore fresh sonic territories.
The band sees this evolution as a necessary step to redefine their identity.
Who are the collaborators in the album?
The list of featured artists on IV went through several changes during production. Initially, the band considered vocalists Lisa Fuad and Heidi Moru for a track that ultimately didn’t make it onto the album. They chose to collaborate with YINY on “My Dear” a song that blends elements of rock and R&B for a unique take on the band’s sound.
Who produced the album?
IV was co-produced by Aiman Z. Productions and Ruang Mekar Productions. Ruang Mekar’s contribution was described as crucial to achieving the album’s cinematic quality, which adds new layers of depth to the band’s evolving sound.
Will there be a physical release?
Yes, fans can look forward to an exclusive, limited-edition cassette release of IV. The tapes will be available at the end of this year through Part Time Rekords.
Will Mascot play in Kuala Lumpur soon?
Mascot is planning a show in Kuala Lumpur before the end of the year, though specific dates have yet to be announced.
