Malaysian hip hop collective 0108 SLATAN has announced its withdrawal from Boiler Room Kuala Lumpur, scheduled for tomorrow, 20th November 2025.
The decision comes amid scrutiny over the event’s ongoing association with issues related to the genocide against Palestinians, following its acquisition by festival operator Superstruct Entertainment and its parent company, private investment firm KKR. KKR is known for its continued investment in Israeli tech and data firms, as well as reported ties to weapons manufacturers and defense contractors.
In an official statement, 0108 SLATAN said the withdrawal followed a thorough review of concerns raised by fans, industry peers and board members, who urged the collective to acknowledge and respect the broader public narrative around recent global developments.
“It was a unanimous decision by all members of 0108 SLATAN, agreeing that withdrawal is the most responsible step and aligns with our values at this time,” the statement read.
The collective emphasised that their decision is not a critique of local organisers, collaborators, or Malaysian creative workers involved in the event.
“We hold deep respect for those who continue to build and elevate the local music landscape. Our decision is guided entirely by ethical and social considerations voiced by our fans and community,” they said.
“This collective withdrawal should not be read as a form of rejection; rather, it reflects the different realities and responsibilities that each artist must navigate within this ecosystem.”
Boiler Room Kuala Lumpur: Kelab Durian is an invite-only event, featuring performances from Half-Malaysian DJ Jax Jones, Shelhiel, DJ KOTE LEMBU, Northern Anthem, I-SKY, and otakotak, a collaborative project between Shelhiel and Mulan Theory.
A counter-event named Spoiler Room is also being held on the same day across several event spaces namely fono, Triptyk and Scream Bloody Bar. A minimum of RM15 donation is required with all proceeds will go to the Shamia family in Gaza.
