Open Privacy’s Latest Single Is Their Most Shoegaze Yet

The band also announced the single’s release party happening on November 6

Kuala Lumpur post-punk band Open Privacy has released a new single, “The Lake”, their second release this year following the January debut EP Noises &.

The track leans into heavier textures and swirling reverb, making it the band’s most shoegaze-leaning song to date and a notable shift from the sharper post-punk edge of the EP.

At a listening session held at sosohub, a café in Petaling Jaya, the band shared that the single was inspired by the 1965 psychological thriller Bunny Lake Is Missing.

Frontman Haqim, who wrote both the music and lyrics, said the song explores “uncertainty” as its central theme, leaving the final resolution to the listener’s interpretation.

Musically, the track carries traces of 1970s acts such as Roxy Music and ABBA. It is also the band’s first single with a new member, Safa Azul on keyboards, who also plays keys in the dream pop band Women & Children.

Open Privacy will hold a release party for “The Lake” on 6 November at Livefact. More details will be announced on the band’s social media.
