Ipoh Sound Convention Set to Celebrate Alternative Music and Counterculture

Discover the sounds that shaped Ipoh’s music scene with performances, discussions, and rare screenings this 17th September 2024.

The city of Ipoh is gearing up for the Ipoh Sound Convention, a unique event celebrating the city’s vibrant alternative music scene and counterculture. 

Scheduled for September 14, 2024, from 10 AM to 7 PM at Moody, Ipoh, this free-to-enter convention promises a day of music, history, and cultural exploration.

Organized by Projek Rabak, PeaceBeUponYou, Kolek, Moody and various local bands and labels, the Ipoh Sound Convention is a DIY initiative aimed at supporting and promoting local music. 

Attendees can expect to browse and purchase a range of local merchandise, including CDs, cassettes, vinyl records, clothing, and other items produced by Ipoh-based bands and artists.

The event will also delve into the rich history and development of counterculture music in Ipoh. 

Highlights include a sharing session titled “1985-2024: The History and Development of Counter Culture Music” and a forum on “1994-2024: 30 Years of Alternative Ipoh.” 

A special screening of the rare gig “Kopi SeChewen Vol. 1 (1997)” will showcase a pivotal moment in the emergence of the “Ipoh Sound.”

In addition to these activities, there will be a karaoke session featuring selected alternative Ipoh songs from the 90s to the present day.
